A Powerful Event when Rosenior Transcends Boundaries

"Rosenior represents a quality coach that understands the game inside out, which is the most important thing.

"However, in my role as the Blues' pioneering black player, it would be dishonest if I said this appointment does not affect me."

These were the sentiments of the former Chelsea winger, who earned his historic debut for the Blues' first team off the bench back in April 1982.

On Tuesday, the club hired Strasbourg boss Rosenior, aged 41, to be their next manager following the departure of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are within the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo which also owns the London club.

Statistics show only 12 black head coaches – excluding individuals in temporary caretaker roles – in England's top flight since its inception thirty-four years ago.

"What really strikes me about Liam is that he was raised and developed his game locally, he knows this community," continued Canoville.

"Whenever children see a figure like Rosenior in charge of their club, a person who looks like them, who's from their ends, who comes from a household that fights for what's right… it is profound demonstrating the path is there.

"Indeed, it is a massive step for the club, for the capital, for every aspiring individual dreaming big.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, give him what he needs, and let the man get on with the job."

What Exactly Does the Statistics Reveal?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became the Blues' head coach back in the nineties and became the top flight's first black head coach.

A dozen years on, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the pioneering black English manager in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo is the sole additional present Premier League gaffer of colour.

The shortage of ethnic minority managers throughout the English game is matched by a lack of diversity in the boardroom.

According to the BFP 2023 report, forty-three percent of Premier League footballers come from black backgrounds.

Yet, analysis from Kick It Out revealed just 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership positions at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are from ethnically diverse communities.

Regarding senior coaching level, according to figures from eleven clubs, the percentage is 2%.

For all coaching roles – including head coaches – from the same eleven clubs, the figure is five percent.

"He has undoubtedly broken barriers by virtue of his appointment as a the Chelsea head coach, and we hope to witness more such appointments," said Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"We know there is loads of talent that exists within ethnic minority communities... aspiring coaches want a chance to demonstrate what they can do. It is imperative to persist in work hard to break those barriers down."

Additionally, the new appointee is set to become one of only four permanent English head coaches currently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – a number that trails the continent's remaining big five leagues regarding homegrown representation.

16 of the 20 first division managers in Italy are Italian, 11 of the 20 are Spanish, Twelve of the 18 are German while Ten of the 18 in France.

The present Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt every young English coaches with a youth development pedigree will be, in some way no matter who you support, rooting for Liam.

"It is really inspirational to up-and-coming British academy coaches to see an individual get such a role with his background and everyone hopes he does really well."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is on merit'

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as West London clubs, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his managerial career culminating in a brief stint at the third-tier club Brentford in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the Honours List for his services in combating inequality in football and wider society.

After Liam retired from playing he followed a path in management. He started writing a column for The Guardian, and in one piece he addressed the lack of diversity among managers. He highlighted that race does not determine ability arguing that roles should be given on merit.

He further expressed the view he would repeat: that significant lack of diversity leads to a failure to understand regarding footballers from different ethnic and cultural heritage.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted the way his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "hard to manage" and "emotional", noting that he could relate to the Dutch international of Nigerian descent. Emegha is set to follow him with a move from France to West London in July.

In further Guardian columns, Rosenior also admitted to being "embarrassed" upon hearing an unnamed staff member make a discriminatory remark. He pledged his support for the Rainbow Laces campaign and authored a public message to the former US President while he was in office, condemning his "overt" racism.

Rosenior has since made his name in the dugout – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney said this week he was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their time together with Derby.

The manager bid his farewells to his former club on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term contract with the Blues.

Chelsea had the Premier League's first African heritage manager in Gullit as well as the first black captain in Paul Elliott.
