A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was proposed pending a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
