Comeback Medvedev Wins Maiden Title in Over Two Years

Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 championships have been won on hard surfaces

A comeback Daniil Medvedev secured his first championship for over two years with victory over opponent Moutet in the competition championship match.

The Russian, a former world number one, has had a torrid year, managing just one win at the Grand Slams and undergoing a meltdown at the American major.

His varied form on the professional circuit - and issues with his serve in especial - resulted in him exiting of the top ten and eventually splitting with long-time mentor Cervara.

Presently collaborating with Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has consistently progressed in the recent weeks - culminating in a closely contested three-set victory over opponent Moutet.

This represents his first title following the 2023 Rome Masters and maiden on a hard court from that period of that year.

Success also indicates Medvedev has won twenty-one titles at 21 distinct competitions.

"This marks the first occasion I'm at a competition with my two daughters together, so to get a trophy is particularly special," said world number 14 Daniil Medvedev.

"This title is in honour of my younger daughter Victoria, because the initial championship I achieved when my child her name was born was for her."

The athlete, the former major winner, had failed in his previous six title deciders, including in that event in the past months.

The player's counter-punching play style and recurring outbursts on the tennis court had caused commentators to question if his capacity to perform at the top level was concluded.

But the 29-year-old has made changes in the past month, attempting to advance forward and play positively, backed up by an improved serve.

The champion fought back from a disadvantage in the opening set against the tricky opponent, winning four of the concluding five points to go ahead.

The competitors exchanged service breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, striving for his initial professional title, gained dominance to push for a third set.

Moutet saved 4 early-game opportunities in a tight final set before Medvedev broke to that score to close out the victory.

Fittingly, the winner clinched victory with a shot at the front of the court, with Moutet incapable to control a return after over two and a half hours.
