Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments must be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to original weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
