TikTok Provides Users Authority to Limit AI-Generated Videos in Their Feeds

Users will soon have a updated setting that enables them to reduce the volume of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their feeds. This move comes as the platform revealed that it presently contains in excess of 1 bn AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The new functionality is undergoing trials over the coming weeks before a full-scale release. This advancement aligns with a rise in content created by AI, driven by recent AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

Studies have shown that almost a tenth of the fastest-growing channels on a competing service primarily display AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this content is deemed “AI slop”, a phrase for substandard, factory-style content that is typically nonsensical or surreal.

“We know from our community that many people appreciate content produced via AI tools, from digital art to informative clips, and we intend to give people the power to increase or decrease of that, according to their own likes,” commented a company executive.

AI on the Platform

The platform disclosed that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its app identified as artificially created. Collectively, more than 100 m videos are added to the app daily, making AI content a relatively small percentage of its total content library.

Customizing Your Feed

Users will be capable of decrease or raise the amount of artificial media they watch by accessing the “manage topic” option in the platform and selecting AI-made media. Other topics that currently be controlled under the tool cover current affairs, style, aesthetics, and choreography.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its policies oblige content makers to tag convincing AI-generated content, and it forbids dangerous fake videos of public figures or crisis events. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is not labeled can be deleted under its community policies.

In addition, the platform will henceforth add an “AI-made” tag to content produced via its built-in AI features, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for spotting content made by AI. This measure is designed to help prevent users from trying to circumvent the tagging system.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is furthermore establishing a $2m AI literacy fund for professionals and groups to produce learning resources about ethical AI use. This project will support non-profit groups focused on educating programming and robotics.

Platform Protection

The video-sharing app has supported its content review process, amid discussion over proposals to make redundant a large number of review team members in Britain. It is set to eliminate 439 jobs in its trust and safety department in the UK capital, with labor groups and internet security professionals raising concerns that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead stated that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by eliminating the most harmful content before it gets reviewed by humans. The company announced a notable drop in disturbing and violent content handled by content reviewers over the past year due to reliance on its AI tools.

It is vital to integrate people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we also think it’s highly necessary to limit contact with dangerous material as rapidly, which is where a significant AI assistance is making a difference process content quickly.”
